Today, Animal and Pet Activist website Wildlife Planet www.wildlifeplanet.net petition asks the USDA for the immediate closure of the Cricket Hollow Zoo AKA The Cricket Hollow Park.
The USDA has issued numerous violations in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 to this roadside zoo located at 1512 210th St, Manchester, IA 52057.
The United States Department of Agriculture had previously suspended the Cricket Hollow Zoo’s license to operate in 2015. As a result of the suspension, the Cricket Hollow Zoo was forced to shutter its doors from June 15 to July 8.
According to the Animal Welfare Act, the USDA can suspend a license to operate an animal enterprise, such as the Cricket Hollow Zoo, “in any case of actual or threatened physical harm to animals” or if APHIS has reason to believe that the licensee has violated or is violating the Animal Welfare Act.
“The Cricket Hollow Zoo has repeatedly failed to demonstrate that it is capable of complying with the Animal Welfare Act and the Endangered Species Act,” ALDF Executive Director Stephen Wells said. “USDA’s decision to suspend its license is long overdue and only serves to bolster our bid to rescue endangered animals who continue to suffer and die there.”
“The USDA has the power and the responsibility to address the overly vague, inadequate, and unenforceable standards of care that have resulted in prolonged suffering of over 300 captive animals,” said Dominick Mezzapesa the owner of Wildlife Planet. “We ask the USDA to consider the best interest of these animals, its own inspector reports, the numerous violations and the public, which expects and relies upon the agency to ensure the best possible treatment of animals in any roadside zoo.
