Fah Jam is an energetic five-month-old baby elephant in Thailand and she is doing something that no elephant in the world has ever done before.
Fah Jam which translates to 'Clear Sky' is receiving hydrotherapy to strengthen the muscles she lost when she lost part of her foot after getting it caught on a snare.
“We named her clear sky up ahead, because that is what she will need while she is with us,” said Kampon Tansacha, the zoo director of Nooch Nooch Tropical Garden where the baby now lives.
Clear Sky has come a long way since becoming separated from her mother in the wild. When she was discovered by villagers she was desperate for milk and required surgery on her bloodied foot.
“This is her second time getting water therapy so she is still a bit nervous and scared of the water,” veterinarian Padet Siridumrong said "We believe by working with her in the water, we can help her safely strengthen her muscles."
Since being taken in by the zoo, her wound has healed and the vets helping Fah Jam believe that she will likely be able to walk again without the need for an artificial leg.
