Two Brutalized Survivors, Comfort Each Other Through Their Harrowing Ordeal
Two dogs from two different shelters in South Carolina who were rescued, weeks apart, from their individual nightmares took an immediate understanding to each others pain.
Simon, a 1-year-old border collie, who is recovering from his own horrific ordeal, lifted his paw to the operating table and rested it on his fellow survivor, Sammie.
Sammie a 4-month-old puppy, had been brutalized by his owner. Dragged by a car, spray-painted and shot with a .22 caliber gun, somehow survived and is, miraculously, slowly recovering from his nightmare.
Despite a barrage of medical procedures, Sammie took comfort from Simon being close by. "Simon won't leave Sammie's side." said Jackie O'Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, adding "The compassion and understanding between the two animals is beyond me."
Sammie may still end up losing a leg" O'Sullivan says he "will likely need more surgeries, physical therapy, laser therapy and daily bandage changes. Being a puppy, behavioral therapy is also possible as he has been robbed of a 'normal' puppy hood.
Simon is standing by his new found friend every step of the way. Maybe he knows the little boxer mix needs all the compassion he can get. While Simon is regaining his strength quickly and will be available for adoption soon, Sammie still has a ways to go on his road to recovery.
We can only hope that these two friends are adopted by a family that won't separate and break the attachment that these two beautiful animals have developed.
