Arkansas Zoo's beloved Asian elephant Sophie Feeling Better
Three years ago this month, Niabi Zoo's beloved Asian elephants, Babe and Sophie, were relocated to what has become a retirement home for retired female circus elephants.
Last month, Sophie had a near-fatal flareup of an incurable uterine infection, and keepers at the Little Rock (Ark.) Zoo were considering what steps to take in the event of her death.
"There was a period we were very concerned and thought she wasn't going to make it," Zoo spokesman Lamor Williams said Monday. "She's gotten a lot better."
Sophie, 47, and Babe, 41, joined 56-year-old Zina in Little Rock in October 2013, following strongly worded advice by an elephant expert who said the harsh Midwest winters were taking a toll on the aged pachyderms, and their enclosure at Niabi in Coal Valley was far from sufficient.
